Brain Tumors on the Rise in New York

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The rates of at least two different
types of
brain tumors appear to have risen drastically over the last 20
years in the
state of New York, according to a new study conducted at the
State
University of New York at Buffalo.

About 18,000 new brain tumor cases are diagnosed in the US each
year,
claiming 13,000 lives, according to American Cancer Society (news
- web
sites).

In the December issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery, Dr. Brian
P.
McKinley and colleagues report findings based on the New York
State
Cancer Registry between the years 1976 and 1995. The researchers
identified 16,695 brain tumors.

When they analyzed how the numbers of cases changed over time,
the
investigators found that the rate for glioblastoma
multiforme--the most
common and lethal type of primary brain cancer--increased by 33%
for men
and 65% for women during the study period. Primary brain cancers
are those
that arise first in the brain, as opposed to tumors from other
parts of the body
that spread to the brain.

A second type of brain tumor, called anaplastic astrocytoma, was
found to
rise 150% and 160% respectively, for men and women from 1984 to
1995.

Better tests and ``a more aggressive diagnostic approach toward
the elderly''
might explain the apparent increases, McKinley and colleagues
point out.
But, they add, ``we cannot rule out the possibility that changes
in
environmental exposures, tumorigenesis, or an inherent
susceptibility of
elderly individuals are responsible for these observations.''

pod wzgledem liczby telefonow i jakie telefony naleza
do tych radioaktywnych?
