Report Sees Drastic U.S. Climate Shift by 2100,
Wash. Post Says

Washington, June 12 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. will
likely see drastic changes in
its climate during the 21st century due to global
warming that could increase the
risk of flood, cause substantial shifts in
agriculture, mass migrations of species
and widespread erosion of coastal zones, the
Washington Post reported, citing
a study mandated by the Congress and prepared by the
Clinton administration's
U.S. Global Change Research Program. Among the
changes forecast through
computer models and historical data are average
temperatures increasing by 5
to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, agricultural production
for almost all commercial crops
increasing 15 to 50 percent, snow packs diminishing
by 50 percent and total
precipitation probably increasing 10 percent, the
Post said. The report employs
conventional assumptions, such as an annual increase
of 1 percent in the
amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and
assumes that sea levels
will rise an additional 5 to 35 inches by 2100, the
Post said.
