Your computer can help find cancer cure
A computer project launched Tuesday will allow you to
help
find drugs to treat cancer. Just download a screen
saver and
let it run when you're not using your PC. The project,
by the National
Foundation for Cancer Research, Intel, United Devices
and Oxford
University, will link home PCs to form a powerful
"distributed"
supercomputer. The concept, popularized by SETI@Home,
which searches
for aliens, is picking up steam in the commercial
sector; free e-mail service
Juno says it will require users to donate PC downtime.
If enough people join in, the project could speed up
drug discovery by three
to five years, says Sujuan Ba of the foundation.
Researchers hope 6 million
people will download screen savers; hours after the
project was announced,
site traffic soared, BA says. "It's exciting to see all
these pioneers. It's a
laboratory without walls."
