'Variegatum'. Wiegers (1809). Germany. A small tree to 10 m tall
with green shoots, not downy or only slightly so on long, vigorous
shoots when young. The leaves are of about the same size as those
of the species, broad, creamy white, with broadly serrate
margins. Young leaves pinkish, occasionally with entirely white
leaflets. It fruits abundantly, but seeds are always sterile,
sometimes also variegated white. It appeared as a sport in a
nursery in Toulouse, France. The plant grown as 'Elegantissimum'
seems to be slightly more variegated. As there is very little
material for comparison, the question of whether 'Elegantissimum'
is distinct from 'Variegatum' cannot be answered. 'Variegatum' is
widely grown and generally available. The tree tends to form
branches bearing entirely green leaves. Such branches must be
removed as they develop.

margins. Flowers in long, drooping racemes, creamy white, plants
dioecios. The cultivar is female and fruits usually are all
sterile. Introduced by F. A. Wiegers, Germany, in 1809. Given the
Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Merit in 1975. [...]
